Going to be rebuilding my desktop in a month due to the fact that my current desktop has the reliability of an FCA product built on a Friday afternoon, and was wondering if anyone had any input on parts to get/avoid. I’ll be grabbing a case (probably a Thermaltake Core G21, but I might pick something else), the OS, and maybe an HDD locally. Current budget is about $2k CAD.

Yes, I recognize the power supply is a bit overkill, but it’s also the same price as the 650 model at the moment.

My EVGA gtx 1060 recently took a dump and only lasted a month, these Pascal cards are a hit or miss in reliability. My old gts 250 is still kicking in my old build.

My EVGA GTX 760 is still decent (minus the driver issues, hence why I’m going for a new build). Thanks for the heads up.

Nice, I need a new machine, but I think the 8700k fits my uses better than Ryzen, which means I’m probably waiting at least another month or two for them to come in stock at reasonable prices.

Also ouch on that video card. I have it and it’s a good performer (very quiet too), but that’s $105 more than it cost 15 months ago.

I know Intel would probably be the better route for gaming, but it’ll cost more than I’m willing to pay for it, plus I’m not a fan of the way Intel has been setting up their lineups (the half baked nightmare that is Kaby Lake X, for one), so I’m interested to see how AMD is.

I’m also paying everything in Canuck bucks, so that may explain a lot of the pricing.

Ah, Canadian money would make more sense.

Yeah, it makes my build cost a few hundred more, which kind of sucks.

Looks real good, considering it’s canadian pesos. Throw in an SSD and I think you have a winner.

It has a WD Black 512 GB SSD, so I should be good.

You could save yourself a few dollars by getting a 1600 and overclocking it a bit.

I was going to be overclocking the 1600x, but excellent point.

I don’t have any personal experience with Ryzen but from everything I’ve watched/read, the cheaper chips seem to be easily OC’d to match the upper end chips. Hence why everyone loves the 1700. It’s hard to beat 8 cores for $300.
